Installing A Pre-Luber

Engine wear is greatest when starting, because there's no oil pressure; this unit takes care of that

TEXT & PHOTO BY RICK CLINE

No one looks forward to the day when it's time to pay for a costly engine rebuild. But, sooner or later, an engine overhaul is necessary. Frequently, the culprit is engine wear. Regular oil changes and preventive maintenance can help, but there is one problem that has always caused headaches -- dry-starting.

Dry-starting refers to the few seconds after starting, when the engine is spinning but oil pressure hasn't built up yet. It's during this time that much engine wear occurs. Now, however, there is a new product designed to eliminate dry-startingthe Pre-Luber from Lubrication Research.

The Pre-Luber is designed to extend engine life by pumping up oil pressure prior to starting the engine. It serves as an oil-cooling device by pumping again after the engine is turned off. This is more than just a side benefit, because keeping oil in good condition is critical for its ability to lubricate engine parts. The Pre-Luber pumps oil from the engine crankcase directly into the oiling system via an existing outlet on the engine block.

The Pre-Luber is not limited to boat engines. The manufacturer recommends it for automotive engines, as well. It is said to work on all piston engines, including gasoline, diesel, turbocharged and supercharged powerplants.

I installed a Pre-Luber on a 1988 2-foot Silver Wing powered by a 350-cubic-inch MerCruiser.

Installation begins at the oilpressure sending unit. A T-fitting is installed below the sending unit, from which a hose is fed to the Pre-Luber pump. The control module is also wired to the coil so that the system can be activated by the ignition switch.

The Pre-Luber kit comes with an oil pump and an electronic control box, plus the various fittings and hoses needed for installation. Basically, the hooks up to the existing oil-sending unit, to the oil-pan drain plug and to the ignition switch.

To start, drain all oil from the engine and reinstall the drain plug. Then disconnect the positive cable from the battery.

Next, find an open area in the engine compartment to mount the Pre-Luber pump, preferably close to the oil-pressure sending unit. On the 350 V-8, the sending unit is located near the distributor at the back of the engine block. Be sure to locate the pump in an area that is as high and dry as possible. Although the manufacturer does not advise that the pump be submerged in water for long periods of time, it is considered to be water-resistant, although it is not waterproof.

Carefully remove the engine oil-pressure sending unit. Then install the T-fitting supplied with the kit into the vacant hole. After the "T" is in position, reinstall the sending unit in one of the openings and an oil-pressure hose fitting in the other. Be sure to reconnect the wire to the sending unit.

Now attach both oil-hose fittings to the Pre-Luber oil pump, which should be mounted nearby. Slip one end of the supplied high-pressure oil hose on the oil-pan drain and route the other end to the Pre-Luber pump. The slip-on nipples on the brass fittings are designed to be used without hose clamps. Before the oil hose is slipped onto the oil-pump fitting, make sure it is connected to the proper "inlet" side to allow the oil to flow in the correct direction from the oil pan to the pump, then to the engine block.

Route the remaining oil-pressure hose from the "outlet" side of the pump fitting to the T-fitting on the back of the engine block. Before connecting the hose to the T-fitting, install the quick-disconnect hose coupler in an accessible location between the T-fitting and the pump. This coupler is used to disconnect the oil line when changing oil. All you'll have to do is turn on the ignition, the pump will activate and pump out the oil in the pan. With all hoses in place, refill the engine with fresh oil.

The final item to install is the electronic control module. This small, black box is the brain of the Pre-Luber system. For this installation, I found an open area on the transom near the battery. Easily mounted with two screws, the wiring job was now ready to be completed. The control module has four clearly marked, plugin terminals labeled yellow, black, red and orange.

Wiring the Pre-Luber system is simple. The kit comes complete with all needed wires already fitted with factory-attached connectors. Therefore, no cutting or patching of wires is required. On the oil pump, there is a built-on pigtail wire with a two-prong female plug. This is to be plugged into the wiring loom to the control module, which has two prongs attached to three wires.

Two red wires and one yellow wire come from the Pre-Luber oil-pump wiring loom. Two of the three wires are plugged into the control-module receptacles marked with the color that matches the wire color (red and yellow). The third red wire will be connected to the battery terminal. This wire has an inline fuse coupled with a large eyelet for the battery terminal.

Plug the orange wire into the control-module position marked "orange" and route the other end of the wire to the positive side of the ignition coil (near the distributor). This wire, like the red battery-terminal wire, has an inline fuse.

The final wire to attach is the black wire. After it is plugged into the black receptacle on the electronic module, the other end should be connected to either the battery ground terminal or to a solid ground on the engine block.

When installation is complete, check its operation by turning on the ignition key. The electric Pre-Luber pump should begin its 15-second cycle. and the oil-pressure gauge will begin to show oil pressure. After its 15-second cycle, the Pre-Luber pump will shut off, signaling that it is time to start the engine.

After the engine is shut off, the oil pump will resume pumping to cool the oil. The post-pumping time can be set manually between 30 seconds and five minutes with an adjustment on the electronic control module.

It's important to note that installation of the Pre-Luber does not interfere with starting the engine. If you forget, or are in a hurry and don't want to wait until oil pressure is built up, you can still turn the key completely and start the engine.

Installation on the Silver Wing took approximately one hour. While MerCruiser does not promote the use of this product, it has notified the manufacturer in writing that use of the Pre-Luber will not void the warranty of its engines. Volvo and OMC have made no comments, so it would be wise to check with your dealer.
