All That Glitters is not Chrome...
Chrome, it’s very shiny; Chrome, it’s very expensive;
Chrome, it shows all dirt, grease, dust, and fingerprints; Chrome, it
retains heat like crazy.
Most items that are chromed are heavy metals. Aluminum,
plastic, and other such materials do not take well to the chroming
process. Chrome will show every minor imperfection and the slightest
flaw in the process will corrupt the end result.
A more forgiving and increasingly popular process is
powdercoating. You can powder coat almost any item and the results are
fantastic. Since we at ESP Products are interested in the performance
aspects of powdercoating, we will stay directed at aluminum.
Intake manifolds and valve covers are the most popular
of items to chrome and now, more than ever, powdercoat. You have a large
selection of colors, textures, and finishes. Recently ESP stripped down
an intake manifold to the bare aluminum and gave it a very rich clear
coat. The results are fantastic. As there are various grades of chrome,
there are various qualities of powdercoats. High gloss and krinkle coats
are the most popular.
Unlike chrome, the powdercoating of single items is MUCH
more reasonable in price. Unlike chrome, small powdercoating shops will
give you excellent service, product, and price. (i.e. Chrome one v-6
intake manifold, $550.00+; Clear coat one v-6 intake manifold, $175-200.
Another benefit is time. Chromers have a horrible
reputation for dragging on and on. We can have a powdercoat job
completed within 5-7 business days. Powdercoating also looks much better
than taking a can of spray paint to your engine and other parts. Other
auto-related parts that are commonly powdercoated from the factory and
the after-market are rims, springs, suspension componants, and more.
Valve Covers; NEW DESIGN,
again...
The 3rd design from M&A valve covers have arrived. They
look the same, but different. The new design is like the old design- we
mean the original. It’s like the old Coke, new Coke, and the Classic
Coke. M&A took the overall design from the original, but with the gasket
surface area from the second design and then added a twist. The smooth
black finish was replaced with a much nicer rough, bare, aluminum
finish. This new design will clear most roller rockers and should have
no oil leak problems as common with the original design. The bare
aluminum surface is ready for powdercoat or paint or to be bolted on.
The "Turbo 6 logo" and "Buick" are still present on the face of the new
design valve covers. Hardware is supplied with the valve covers.
Breathers and gaskets are not supplied.
