IMTEC Innovation Awards Honda & Pre-Luber

Advances in engine technology earned the the 1990 International Marine Trades Exhibit and Convention (IMTEC) Innovation Awards in both the domestic and the international categories. This year's winners feature low maintenace and high fuel economy, and reveal trends in the marine industry aimed at creating ever more efficient and ecologically sound powerplants.

Honda Marine's four-stroke outboard won top honors in the international category. Providing excellent fuel efficiency in a highly popular horsepower range, Honda's 35- and 45-hp "Fours" are four-stroke outboards that are light, quiet, fuel-efficient and vibration free.

In the domestic category, Lubrication Research, Inc., received the IMTEC Innovation Award for the Pre-Luber, a compact, electronically controlled oil pump that automatically pre-pressurizes and lubricates the engine before start-up, on turning the ignition key or flipping a switch. The product significantly reduces engine wear and maintenance costs, as well as promoting fuel efficiency.

A major world automobile and power products conglomerate, Honda has been a minor player in the marine outboard engine game for several years with outboards only up to 15 hp. The Honda Marine 35- and 45-hp four-stroke outboards are remarkable. They release no smoke on start-up or running, they have no oil mixed with fuel so no oil is introduced into the environment through the exhaust, and their engines are quiet and vibration-free. Fuel savings are available at every throttle setting but the savings at trolling speeds are a mind-boggling 75% by comparison with comparable two-strokes. At full speed, one can expect fuel savings of 25%. None of these figures include the savings of not having to buy oil to mix with the fuel.

Honda's engines even sound different, almost like an aircraft engine. Automatic over-rev limiters are set at about 6,500 rpm and both a visual an audible alarm notifies you when your engine is overtrimmed.

The Pre-Luber is not a product that engine manufacturers are likely to embrace. However, from the consumers perspective, the Pre-Luber from Lubrication Research may be the greatest thing since sliced bread. A simple oil pump that mounts in the engine compartment, it hooks to the ignition. Turn the key on, and within seconds, your oil system is primed and pressurized. You can then start your engine with peace of mind.

Pre-Luber products come as ready-to-install kits, each with its own pump, electronic module, brass fittings, nine feet of hose, drain plug, grommets, screws and an installation manual. For the uninitiated, Lubrication Research claims installation will take about two hours. However, the say that a good mechanic should be able to do the installation in 20 to 30 minutes.

There's one other benefit from using a Pre-Luber. Never again will you have to change oil the old-fashioned way. No more searching through hot oil for that drain plug that fell in. Standard issue on the Pre-Lubers is an oil drain hose that attaches to the pump outlet. Just put the end of the hose into a container, turn on the ignition key and pump out your dirty oil.
